The Trail was started in 2005 by the Teignmouth Midsummer Folk Festival with funding to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Boards and a Plaque were erected in 2007 and the Trail was opened on 26th April 2007 by two folk singers, Jim Payne & Fergus O'Byrne, from Newfoundland, with which Teignmouth has historic links.

The Plaque contains the names of the 14 men from Teignmouth who fought at Trafalgar.

This Trail proved very popular and it was extended to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (60 years).

The town is host to a hotel for people with little or no sight. Using the 'Talking Pen', which uses microdot technology, the residents can access the trail information. When passed over the relevant area on a card the ‘Talking Pen' activates a recording of the text that is on the required board.
